May 10, 2017 Story Time - Shoo Fly!

If you missed this weeks story time here is what we did:

Tiny Little Fly  by Michael Rosen*
Astrid the Fly  by Maria Jonsson
The Fly  by Petr Horacek*
The Fly Flew In  by David Catrow
There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy  by Tedd Arnold*
Fly!  by Karl Newsom Edwards
Old Black Fly  by Jim Aylesworth*

For our craft we made a fly like this one, only his wings were paper, we added huge googly eyes and attached a craft stick:
https://goo.gl/kMVKLI

Extra activities
We learned some facts about house flies like:
1) they go through four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa and adult
2) they have two eyes, each eye contains 4000 lenses that enable it to see different pictures at the same time. Despite the huge number of lenses, house flies have poor eyesight!
3) they produce a sticky substance which keeps the fly firmly attached to the ground (or ceiling)
4) they rely mostly on their sense of smell to search for food. Their sense of smell is located in their antennas
5) in order to eat, all food needs to be turned into liquid because flies do not have teeth or the ability to chew. SO house flies spit or vomit digestive juices on the food to decompose it. Then they slurp the liquid up with their tongue which is shaped like a straw
6) they are active during the day and rest at night

Shoo Fly!
Shoo fly don't bother me
shoo fly don't bother me
shoo fly don't bother me
for I belong to somebody
After we sang this verse we used Fly Guy finger puppets to land on different parts of our bodies like:
head, arm, hand, foot, knee, etc. After our fly landed we re-sang the verse

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
(we used this diagram while we read the story, then each child got to stick something she swallowed to her stomach)
